Rem 284 brass

I know this has been covered before, but couldn't find it in my searches.
I've got a small quantity of 284 brass, and was wondering if it's worth the effort to trim it for my 450.
Would the cases need to be reamed too? That would be the show stopper.

Might not be worth the extra effort, when I have factory brass I can reload.

What I have done so far is to get the factory ammo as cheap as possible and reload the cases. When you can get factory ammo for $22 it is not much more than you could load new brass for. Palmetto has it in stock for that price: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.ph ... d-box.html

Thats what I've been doing, and the best plan IMO.
I just came into some 284 brass, and the light bulb came on. Sadly it's a dim bulb.

Keep the brass! Someday you might want to take the plunge. I have never had problems using the 284 Brass (though others have).

That Brass doesn't eat anything and if you got it cheap enough, it stores well. Protect it from the elements and it'll stay bright and shiny. And when you want more power than the 458 Winchester, it makes great 450LM's..

Got the pile of misc/oddball brass for free from a distant uncle.
Wet pin tumbled it all, and have been blessing friends and family with brass they could use.
Kept the LC 762x51 for myself. Gonna make a wind chime with the 300H&R mag.
It's all good. The 284 can sit in a bag til I have time to mess with it.

So, I've only got 17 of these but will proceed with the trimming anyway. Should I trim them to 1.700 or 1.695? My Hornady load sheet says case length 1.7 trim length 1.695.

IMHO, trim them to 1.704 and see if the bolt will close. If it does, you're good to go and the shrinkage, while not as bad as Hornady 450b brass, should drop them right into spec after the first shot. If the bolt won't close, take .001 off and repeat until they do fit. Important: After you cut them down initially, close to the 1.704, resize them in the 450b die before you do your final trim them to 1.704. I say that because if the .284 chamber they were shot in is a loose chamber, resizing them will make them grow a little longer and if you did the 1.704 trim beforehand, they might be longer than that afterward.

Thanks Hoot. Makes perfect sense, you can't add length after you take it off.
