Happy new year guys :)

I'm looking for the best hunting projectile for a client & myself after he had an "issue" with the Factory loaded 250 FTX ammo on a Deer.

It didn't do a very good job, not saying the shot placement was very good, but the bullets path was very erratic on target....

I have come across threads about these, Barnes 200 & 275 XPB are these still the "best" ?

Cheers Greg.

Just my opinion, but yes, the 200 & 275 XPB's are the best I have found so far.

I'm curious to hear the story if you wouldn't mind telling it. I've shot two critters with a factory load, and both bullets preformed different. The first one was a little surprising. Passed through a hogs rib cage and the exit was about the same as entrance.

First of all it wasn't me, I'm just relaying the story, so might not have all the facts....

A clients, GF shot a small Red Deer reasonably close sub 100 yards, the projectile went along the rib cage breaking ribs etc, little internal damage, then veered off/disappeared, the Deer then went 2-300 yards before being subdued.

I have shot a goat, DRT, but the bullet also veered a fair way off course....I didn't think much of it as it dropped on the spot until he mentioned his little drama.

I know it is a ridiculously small sample & anything could have happened, but being a short stumpy projectile might not be helping ... ?

I haven't shot anything else with my ones except targets.

Another client is very happy with his sub-sonic terminal performance with the 225 ftxs.

Just looking for Guys with more experience with the calibre for help with it.

Greg. Your client. He was shooting subsonics or factory 250FTXs?

Sorry amended my 1st post, factory 250 FTX ammo

The 250 FTX round is too hard for sub work I found when testing.

Just for information, I was sighting in at 300 yards and recovered this Hornady 250 gr FTX bullet (2 views) from a soft, damp earth berm behind the target. Retained 95% of its weight (although there is a little mud still stuck to it). I don't know what this means, but I thought it was "cool." Also the guy I was with had his binoculars on the target and could actually see the trajectory, which was falling rapidly.

Damp earth density stacks up pretty fast when compressed rapidly. Especially if it has an occasional lump of denser clay or clod in it. Your retrieved bullet confirms that the 250 FTX still expands at 1100fps into a firm backstop.

Forgot to mention that it penetrated between 8 and 10".
