More consistent side crimps from the 45-70 Modified Die

Postby 3rdgeargrndrr » Sat Apr 11, 2015 3:48 pm

To whomever is using the 45-70 modified crimp,
Is everyone getting a consistent crimp with this die?
It seems that my crimps can be anywhere between .4740 to .4765.
I admit the pressure I am exerting on the handle can vary, but sometimes I crank it down and its .475, and other times, .475 with normal pressure.
Using a hornady lock n load single stage, as well.
Is this something that I develop a feel for or is there just inherent inconsistencies with this crimp?
I'm looking at ceasing to use the crimp if I keep getting inconsistent diameters. Thanks in advance

3rdgeargrndrr,

So, tell me, what are you trying to do? What's your mission?

Are you trying to make match loads??

Not match, but really just minimizing all the variables at this point so i can blame other things other than the loads.
after brass prep, triple checking weights and all other OCD things combined, something else to fret about.
Maybe my next post will be how to get minimal runout

Ok, But you are not going to do better than the threads in the press and the die. Just micro adjust it every time you use it. The temperature in your reloading room will account for those measurement differentials, from one loading session to the next.

Like I say, in a new session, just adjust the die, use the same stroke and go for it.

Crimping does matter, but what you are after might just be a bridge to far. But Hey, Excellence doesn't hurt!!

try cycling the handle twice maybe rotate the case 3/8 of a turn on the 2nd stroke (lack of Dunkin Turbo on this mornings theory would think it would even out the little stabs)

Another thing I do with those crimp dies, is pull it down and put a dab of neversieze around the nose.

Is that when changing setups or during the same setup?
I don't recall seeing crimps vary much once everything is dialed in and locked down.

Is that using brass of the same life cycle, IE all 1-fired, all 2-fired, etc?
The stuff changes hardness every reload.

What about all using the same bullet? That matters as well.

The width of the bite even factors in. The narrower the bite, the greater the consistency.

Food for thought...

Thanks for the input, there are still several things I will need to consider and measure now that I think about it.
Totally forgot about temperature playing into the equation as well.
I am using all new brass but one variable I didnt measure... case thicknesses or separated by weight, not sure if the brass is that inconsistent but its also a possibility.
