.454 or .452

Postby the_mad_rshn » Tue Oct 20, 2009 10:59 pm

Gents,

Loading lead (cast) what do you suggest I size it? I am used to the 454 even though I do have the 452 sizer. Why? Why not?

Thanks all.
Cheers,
Mad

My experience with cast bullets is to use .452. .453 will work, but make sure the loaded round chambers easily (thunk test). I used 300's to 400's and on all weights the bullet slumped or slugged into the bore upon firing (at least my recovered bullets showed rifling engraving over a larger surface than the as cast bullet). I used bullets from Cast Bullet Performance -- which are fairly hard. I want to revisit cast bullets again, but I would like to see a gas check that is taller(?) dimensionally than the gas port.

To date I've had the best accuracy sizing to .453, which just fills the throat in my barrel.
